Greg’s Adventures and Beyond
США
Добавлен 11 авг 2024
Hi. My name is Greg Redding. I am a father and musician that loves the outdoors and backpacking. My hiking journey began back in 2016 when I completed the first 30 miles of the Appalachian Trail from Springer Mountain to Neels Gap. I have since done about 230 miles of the AT with more sections planned. Recently I have been inspired to stop thinking and actually set a goal to thru hike the entire AT albeit a couple years away. Im no expert!! And this will be a journey of learning from planning to gear testing and reviews, to keeping in shape and anything else involved with bringing this dream to life. All that with a sprinkle and a dash of some singing and music along the way. So, follow along and let’s see where this goes! Much love to all!!
2025 Thru Hike Announcement! And some new gear
Our 2025 thru hike announcement!, as well as my newest piece of gear that is going on trail with me!
We won the lottery! Well…we won A lottery lol. Our second attempt for permits via the lottery system for permits to hike the JMT was successful! We won a permit for Yosemite NP from Happy Isle and exiting Donohue Pass. A golden ticket! And we are excited to bring you along with us on this journey!
Along with that, I had just upgraded my tent to lighten my pack a bit so I’m super excited to be able to say we will be using the new tent on our thru hike attempt of the JMT this year!

Polaroid and PooBear set out to do 5 days on the AT. The cold was definitely a challenge but, we ultimately cut it short due to PooBears backpack. Background music “The Trail” by yours truly, Greg Redding aka Polaroid.

So, this is the beyond part of Greg’s Adventures and Beyond. Ive been putting it off a bit because although I’m used to playing and singing in front of a crowd, this camera thing is just different. A bit more intimidating for whatever reason. But here goes nothing. I hope you enjoy the video. Not the best audio getting things going but It will get better as I go. Thanks for watching!! And so begins this RUclips journey. There will be lessons learned along the way but for now, here is my first video. I just used some footage and pics of a hike I took with my son back in 2023. It was a great little trip. I hope you enjoy it and thanks for watching. The Durston is great tent. Another nice two person tent with a 50 inch wide floor is Tarptent Rainbow. The nylon version is about 2.5 lbs (Dynema version is lighter). Nylon version is about $350 range.
Another trail you may want to checkout is the Benton MacKay trail that starts on Springer mountain in Georgia. It is a 300 miles trail that crosses the AT numerous times.
Great tent choice. Have fun preparing for your trip!
Have a blast! The JMT is absolutely gorgeous and challenging! Hopefully your itinerary is not as aggressive as our's was back in 2014 and you can camp at some of the fantastic lakes such as Rae Lakes (there are 3) on the north side of Glen Pass.
@@KevinRStrauss we have a 21 day itinerary with one possible added day if needed built into our plan. Still ironing it all out but we’ve got about 6 lakes planned for stops. At the moment our longest day will be 15.1 according to the itinerary. I think we have 2 of those. Gonna be a challenge for sure but, should be epic!
@@GregsAdventuresAndBeyond, fantastic! A 21-day itinerary should work well and allow you to not feel "rushed" like we did and enjoy the scenery and campsites so much more.
Do you think they’d survive as water crossing shoes too?
@@KristyBryson I was actually thinking about this last night as I have a hike coming up with some water crossings. These are definitely more of a hanging out, doing camp chores or just going from point A to point B camp shoe. I would not use them for water crossings at all.
I have some on the way. Exactly what I have been looking for too. Can’t believe that more companies don’t offer something like this. The fact that zpacks can’t keep them in stock tell you how much they hit the nail on the head with these. So simple.
I've seen some pack the thermarest in it's stuff sack and use that as a firmer option
@@Luke_0 Yeah. I just couldn’t make the stuff sack option work. I ended up using the Nemo Fillo on my latest outing and it was about as good as it gets for me. Weighs 9 oz but I’m pretty ultralight everywhere else so I’m good with it.
@GregsAdventuresAndBeyond I'll probably go the same way, thanks for your review!
Awesome video can’t wait for your 2025 year 2024 looks like you had a great time making lots of memories
Can’t wait for more videos keep up the great work

Loved your video. Stumbled upon it this morning finishing mine up. Great work!!!
Nice video! I saw these on their website and found them interesting. New follower here. Crow
Try a Supirior wilderness designs backpack.
@@PrybarCommando She ended up going with the new Osprey Eja. She has to have that trampoline style back. It’s just a much much better fit for her and only a couple ounces heavier than the Circuit she used on this trip.
Did the shock cord work well for holding your foot in place?
@@cheri7828 It did!
How did your Aplha Direct fleece work for you? Is it 60g, 90g or a 120g?
@@cheri7828 It worked fantastic! It’s a Farpointe 60. I’ll probably invest in a 90 as well but the 60 was perfect.
Ah yes the great pillow journey, been there. Here is what I have found that works best for me. I take my puffy jacket and zip it up, then take an inflatable pillow and slide it into the jacket. The pillow is oriented length wise from jacket arm pit to arm pit. Fold the sleeves over the chest, fold the lower half over the top half. Now take that and slide it into a tee shirt, that's your pillow case. If you wear your puffy to bed then this won't work. But it's like having your down filled pillow from home on the trail with you
@@daveebert7747 that’s a really great idea but it wouldn’t work for myself. I do wear my puffy to sleep on colder nights. On top of that, I’m leaning more into simplicity or basically having a one piece item that does it all for me. It’s a balancing act as I’m sure you know lol. Honestly, the Nemo Fillo did the trick for me.
I'm going to give these a try when they're back in stock. My current solution is the Saguaro mesh garden clogs. The positive for them is I can walk around all day in camp with them, they are super comfortable, they've saved me from many stubbed toes, and at 9.6 oz for the pair they're lighter than most sandals and flip-flops (the only thing lighter I've tried is a pair of water socks, but those are only 2 oz lighter). The downside is the bulk in the pack and 9.6 oz is still a lot. These seem like a good alternative especially for trips where my camp time isn't going to be the main attraction. I can always bring along the ole bread bags if I need toe protection in camp and my hiking shoes are wet.
@@somerandomguy706 I highly recommend giving them a shot. They are the best balance of ultralight minimalist and comfort I have found.
I hope you are enjoying your pack. I have the Arc Haul 50. I went with the 50 because I live in the south and most of my trips are three seasons. The extra room of the 60 would be great for cold weather. I have used my Arc Haul for about two years now. I don’t baby it, but I don’t abuse it either. I’m glad to report that it is holding up great. I have really enjoyed owning this pack. I feel like it was well worth the money.
@@toghikes The 60 litter was perfect for a cold weather hike! I absolutely love this pack and will be doing my full review on it now that I’ve used it for a couple days. It is hands down my favorite and the most comfortable pack I’ve ever used!
Hi Tog👋 Good afternoon.🌹🌹🌹I hope my comment didn't sound as a form of privacy invasion your comment tells of a wonderful woman with a beautiful heart which led me to comment I don't normally write in the comment section but I think you deserve this complement. These look like they would make a great travel slipper too. Nice video, got my calendar marked for Jan
Show us the swirlies in the water !
Great video, great music, and great last name. Fellow Redding.
@@pauliedamickoutdoors Ha! Awesome! And thank you!!
Brother, it wasn't a failure, as your title suggests. Nobody likes to camp in the cold. I see this trip as a fact finding trip. I bet you learned a few more things about yourselves and dialed in your needs. Not a failure! You did amazing. And also, that's pretty cool, you composed your own music to go with the vid.
@@midlifetravelers6151 thanks so much but the failure was more referring to her backpack. Or the choice we made to switch it up. We tried something new for her hoping it would be better. It was not! Lol. So that’s the failure part. Other than that, it was an awesome trip. We would have stuck it out if not for the pack making her miserable. We actually do love the cold. It provides a challenge that we don’t get to face often and even through the misery of it, the cold itself with the right gear is tolerable. I did learn a few things though, as I always do. Every trip is a learning experience and that’s part of the fun for me! Thank you! And much love my friend!
Let’s drop the (💩 POO) off 🐻 BEAR. I loved your video. How about little bear❤
@@krystaogletree826 well…there’s a little story that goes along with here trail name. It fits…and it’s cute so there is that lol.
@ okay!!! I can’t wait to return back to the trail in May. Stay warm ❤️
@ I’m always itching for the trail! You stay warm as well!!
Hey there Greg. I came across your vid this morning and wanted to say I enjoyed it. I have frozen my backside off on Tesnatee Gap before. Nice on the side that blocks the wind, but ‘very chilly’ when that wind hits you! Looking forward to more adventure vids from you!
@@SheGoneAgain That wind is definitely the worst part of hiking in the cold! lol. But I still loved every second of it! Thanks so much for watching and I’m so glad you enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to getting back out and doing more vids like this. Much love to you and have a fantastic day!
I am certain you guys had a chilly hike! I prefer it a bit warmer!
@@SheGoneAgain It was actually a very refreshing hike! We love the colder weather. It would have been much more tolerable if not for PooBears backpack.
I have the same trekking poles and they are well built and light weight I have over 600 miles on them so far with no issues
Great adventure so far. I personally would rather hike in the cold rather than the heat less sweating. Keep up the awesome content !!
It was 18 degrees here in Dawsonville(about 15 miles away)a couple of nights ago, probably the night you had that was so cold! Although I heard it was about that cold sometime around thanksgiving, not sure, we were on a long cruise. Nice video, wind was crazy here yesterday!
@@nancysatori4744 yeah this was Thanksgiving weekend. We went up pretty prepared for the most part. Nights were more comfortable than the days. We would have stayed out longer if not for PooBears backpack. It was just a terrible fit and made it really hard for her to deal with anything.
Now you know we wanted to see the swirlies!
@@nancysatori4744 🤣
It's -2 degrees here in the UP of Michigan. It's not even winter yet. Stay warm.
@@billprice6458 I actually love the cold! I’ll take a long cold winter over FL hot humid year long summers any day! lol. It’s so much easier to stay warm with good gear than it is to stay cool in my opinion. Thanks and you stay warm as well!!
@@GregsAdventuresAndBeyondI am with you on that! I take cold over humidity anytime! I used to live in Fla!
Nice Video, it's good that PoohBear kept you on track!..🚶🚶🚶
Yeah! She’s good Ike that lol.
Good video! I’ve been eyeing these camp shoes since they came out. What size did you go with?
@@JasonHikes1 I wear a 9 1/2 - 10 in regular shoes and went with the Large. They are perfect. Especially if you plan to wear socks with them.

Hey Money, just checking out what I night be getting myself into next year. I'm digging the walking music, and the slo-mo water fall. But I think Pooh bear was right you should've showed the swirlies...lol.
@@xstatic13 I’m thinking about switching it up for you guys next year. I want you to love it so I’m gonna hook you and ruin the AT for you all in one trip lol.
@GregsAdventuresAndBeyond haha I'll be ready, I think anyway.
Satchmo!!! Good job sir!!!
Good job Money. Much love my brother.
@@xstatic13 thanks brother!
Nice pack. I’m currently debating 60L vs 70L.
@@globetruck17 I chose the 60 because I’m used to a 65 and really want to cut down on the amount of stuff I carry. Truth is, I probably could have gone with a 50L but I’m super happy with the 60.
I just bought the 70L, figuring I'll have room for a bear cannister or anything bulky, but I can roll it down smaller if I don't need the space. I hope that makes sense (I'm just about to get into backpacking after a decades-long hiatus). Which one did you go with?
Thats a badass backpack
@@xstatic13 yeah man. I really love this thing!
I saw it said "and one happy camper". But seeing the very next picture after that I would say "Two happy campers". That's really cool Greg.
