One fateful day, when I was in second grade Catholic school, we were reading during social studies class. I always volunteered to read because I enjoyed reading out loud. We were learning about different countries in Africa and one of them happened to be Niger . Now mind you, I didn’t know anything about Africa yet, as I was only in second grade, so I had no idea how any of these countries were pronounced. Well, it got to the point in the paragraph that I was reading, that I had to pronounce the word Niger. I hesitated for a moment and then began to try to sound it out and I was like, “Nnn, nnig.” My teacher quickly talked over me and said “Niger!” pronouncing it properly. The whole class busted out laughing at me. And I didn’t even know why because I had never even heard the “N” word before. (apparently they had). This was in South Florida, West Palm Beach. It was a melting pot down there, and there was no such thing as racism, at least not to my knowledge as a child, so I didn’t even know that I was about to pronounce a racist slur. But everyone laughed at me. I was so embarrassed that I just cried the rest of the class and during that time it was winter, so we had to wear these burlap feeling green cardigans over our school uniforms. They were very rough. I kept drying my eyes with the sleeves and by the end of the day, all around my eyes, the skin was completely raw. I looked ridiculous. I didn’t find out why I was being laughed at until I went home and told my parents.
