'Henna Night', a video essay by artist Banu Çiçek Tülü explores Kına gecesi (henna nights), a traditional Turkish wedding custom of gathering the evening before a wedding to celebrate the marriage and mourn the bride’s departure from her family home. Kına gecesi ceremonies focus on the bride’s body: her hands are painted with henna and she is dressed in special garments. Although the fraught symbolism of the henna night re-inscribes rigid traditional values around women’s roles in society, it is also an opportunity to connect with family and cultural traditions through music, chants, and dance. Really important theme! I loved lecture from Andrew Holden; many very very relevant and important observations and thoughts! I am professional artist, educator and tourism worker who is interested in same themes talked about here. Also interested in precarious lifestyles and incomes created in creative and hospitality industries and how to make them more stable.
