Trail maintenance. "Man trails", through the woods on Isle Royale, are meant to be 12" wide. It can sometimes be challenging to follow the trail over the rocky landscape. At one point I had to wander a bit to find the way over the rocks and back towards camp. I missed my Gaia app. Being in a place like this maked me more aware of the importance of paying attention to my surroundings.

    Keep growing, but make sure and read all sides of an issue before becoming dogmatic. Just because something feels virtuous does not mean that it is true. How many times have people made things worse thinking they were making it better (Forest service not allowing forest fires to burn, when I was growing up, lead to much bigger and more destructive fires, as an example)

      Thanks for your comment. I totally agree with you. I think it's important to do research, ask questions, and don't just leap on to the idea that promises quick and easy results. It took 50 years for this River to get to the impaired state that it's in and we won't see improvement over night, maybe not even in my lifetime, but somethings got to be done and someone's got to do it.

    Bike packing is where you’d ride where hikers hike, and where you wouldn’t go in a car, bike touring is riding on pavement, roads, paths, and gravel roads, that aren’t really harsh. Some of that is probably incorrect but that’s the best I can explain

    • @GrowingOldwithKaryn

    70yo, limited-mobility handicapper here. Wheelchair/dual forearm crutches user here. 30-years of recumbent experience here. Owned 2, 3, and 4-wheel recumbents! Not able to get on/off my tadpoles for 15 years now. My Hase Lepus' (3 each) are my mobility. Under seat, indirect steering leaves upper arms vertical at rider's side and the indirect pivots isolate road vibration HUGELY from rider's hands and arms! E-assist here too, AND Rohloff gearbox! Once a Rohloff gearbox, never again any cassette! 2WD for running dog off road and towing kids on snow. Tadpoles ARE way better sports cars than Deltas. Delta trikes are way better SUV, pickup truck, minivan, jeep! 95++% of trike riders do not need tadpole speed handling unless living in a hilly area. NEVER see recumbent trikes being ridden hard in SW Ohio. Largest bike path mileage in all of America here! My firsthand experience.

      Wow! Thank you for commenting. I am impressed and inspired. It sounds like your health challenges haven't slowed you down any. Tell me more about the Rohloff hub. I've been thinking that will be my next upgrade.

    • @garyseckel295
      @garyseckel295 2 месяца назад

      @@GrowingOldwithKaryn Rohloff hub is mounted below and aft of seat totally out of the way. You can rapidly shift all 14 gears while sitting still! Rohloff hub is INTERNALLY indexed making typical twin cables non adjustment critical! There is no low hanging chain like cassette shifting. There are cheaper gearboxes, but Rohloff IS the global touring choice of world travelers. On recumbent trikes, chain not belts are required, because of length. Some people make use of small levers on both handgrips. One side for up shifting. Other side for down shifting. Internal indexing (not shift cables) of Rohloff gears is beautiful! Recumbents trikes ARE expensive! Buy one ONCE and never outgrow it!!! Easy oil change too. They have close-up pictures on Hase sites. Slowest and stationary shifting not possible on cassette if I am out watching wildlife, etc. You can always start off in any gears, if 4-5 lowest gears are great for hill climbing! Shimano e-assist here. Carry full size and finger-size monocular on my neck for scenery, wildlife and up-close butterfly watching. Sow milkweed seed to help monarch butterfly! too handicapped to plant milkweed plants now. I have been telling world that tadpole trikes are ONLY sports cars for years under the name "Jason Stillwater."

Retirement savings withdrawals without penalty, baby! Woohoo! lol. You know my current situation. All of the adventures i want to enjoy are on hold for an undetermined amount of time. I often think...will i be too old and not in shape anymore by the time i can finally start checking off bucket list adventures? Like...hiking the caminos in Spain and France, checking out every far reaching corner of NV's state parks, watching icebergs float past the shores of New Foundland, or digging for diamonds in AR's Crater of Diamonds State Park. Then I think of you. You inspire me every day, my friend. Love you to pieces! Keep on sharing "real" stuff!.💞

    To me aging gracefully means accepting the fact that I am getting older and that has some limitations that need to be navigated. For example I don’t recover from injury as fast as I use to. I accept that but I don’t allow it to control my life. I still hike - but I need to stretch a little more etc.
