    The two main types of speakers are Electro-static, and electro-dynamic ( no need for a sub-woofer with properly designed loud-speakers)

      In my opinion and having electrostatic speakers, definitively needs a subwoofer. I have an old pair of Acoustat and they sound superb but with a powered 10" sub, it really makes overall sound much better 😊

    Bookshelf speakers are generally better for imaging and soundstage…but they bring their own issues …not to forget ..the speakers should have a stand that places the tweeter at the listener positions ear level.

    GM ☕️from Toronto. Placement and room treatment are the biggest challenges to getting ANY speakers to give you a better performance…however,you’re going to probably need (want) a sub… Then if you’re going the high end route..Wilson and their custom set up ..work with the client’s living space (with minimal treatment) ..but you’re paying for it. Great vide 👍

    Any chance of a more in-depth tour of your equipment? And plans for the future if any?

      Hi! I am currently working remotely from New Zealand, but once I return to the UK in August I can of course do a tour of my equipment. If you are interested, I did a series last year on @futureshopuk channel called 'Setting up my first vintage Hi-Fi system' where you can follow along my journey of choosing and putting together my system! :) ruclips.net/p/PLftV7CQEqebzVIxeI-auHFAhWcHfs_ah1&si=1pHgSlnoTXWHMHge

    ZU DW6 Speakers with the upgrades. Run them for several hundreds of hours.... let ZU do that before shipping to your home. Purchase a NAD M10v2 and hook everything to it. Rock the house !

    You did what I wanted to do in the first place but couldn't. I ended up purchasing 2 blutooth speakers because I couldnt find decent vintage home stereo (1970s to mid 80s). Maybe next year. Your equipment is exactly like what I wanted (elegant). I didnt want any ugly black plastic stuff.

    good point... I'd say something like a AudioTechnica VTA Carbon from Drop website whenever that goes back in stock is probably the best starter turntable

    when i started 50 years ago i took a lot of advice from sales staff at hifi stores, they were really good back then, as for buying vinyl records stick to dealers you can trust not sellers emptying their loft, caveat emptor (-:

      Never do maintenance behind the equipment rack which leads to a lot of time cleaning when I do eventually need to get behind there! Will definitely try and change my habit for the better in this regard.

    Awesome suggestions on where to find audio equipment . I have several questions if you don’t mind. My brother in law gifted me a super clean Sony STR-DE 197. However my AM radio reception is little to nonexistent . I have it as my garage setup and I was wondering, what type of antenna would help me get the best reception for AM stations. Secondly I would like some bookshelf speakers that have enough bass that I won’t have to hook up a separate woofer. Price on the bookshelf speakers can’t go over $150 USD😂especially since they’ll be used in the garage. Thank you very much in advance for any help, your friend in south Texas

      @emilyinhifi 6 месяцев назад

      Thanks for your question! Are you using an external aerial for your receiver? For AM these generally require a copper 'loop' type, hence you could try making a larger loop and/or raising it up. For used speakers there are a lot to choose from if you're prepared to shop around. The obvious ones to look for would be from brands such as Mission, Jamo, JPW, Wharfedale and perhaps Q Acoustics.

    Good video with great tips, and if you don't mind me saying so, a breath of fresh air too. Even after auditioning 3 separate AVR's, the same ambient sound of the room was still present! That told me the unwanted faint background signal noise I had been experiencing had nothing to do with the actual units. Therefore, my attention changed to the cables. And even then It was only on the third occasion after I finally purchased shielded cables that the noise floor within my small room finally came down to satisfactory levels. Unshielded cables often act as antennas for attracting RF, and the longer the cable, the better the antenna. Probably explains why when I used to disconnect my heights and surrounds within 10 minutes, the faint background signal noise (RF/EMI) within my small room used to disappear/dissipate. The more cables I shield, the quieter my room becomes. In fact, the last group of cables I shielded were my HDMI's, and Lo behold the room became slightly quieter yet again. When friends came around, I used to show them how loud the system goes. Now I prefer to show them how quiet it goes. None of them gets it, of course 😂

    • @emilyinhifi
      @emilyinhifi 6 месяцев назад

      Thank you! And it's great to hear about your experience regarding shielded cables! People often say that cables don't make a difference but we both know that in fact they are an extremely important part of a home audio/cinema setup!

    Another factor to consider (but it can take a long time to figure out), is which brand's sound signature appeal to you in terms of tonality the most fundamental sonic quality. E.g. "dark" - McIntosh, QAcoustics, Elac; "bright" - B&W, Focal, Klipsch, or (the rarest and my personal favourite): "balanced" - Dynaudio, Rotel. The advantage of having a system built around all balanced components is a) plays every single music genre well! b) less difficulty in synergistic matching with other components (especially if they are also balanced). Here is an example of top model balanced Dynaudio and Rotel balanced models paired up, demonstrating what I mean, e.g. the piano sounds natural not shrill. ruclips.net/video/VcHlxgkBIsM/видео.html

      Yes this is a very good point! I plan on going into more detail at some point about aspects such as synergy and specific sound signatures. Thank you for your input and knowledge, this is very helpful!

  • @connorduke4619
    @connorduke4619 6 месяцев назад

    Good tips. Also, ferrite rings placed near the input component can assist in RFI/EMI reduction. And placing components on Ikea Aptitlig chopping blocks, with Atacama gel pads underneath also work surprisingly well.

    A good simple explanation. A power conditioner is a great way to keep noise from coming into you system through the power source. I guess those plugs are little ones with simple RF filters. A power conditioner will also protect from power variations in the power distribution system from your local utility. My US utility often fluctuates from 110V to 124V. Keeping your speaker wires short helps keep them from picking up RF noise. The worse thing is a coil of extra speaker wire. Thank god people don't use CB radios anymore. Fiber optic cables are great. Since everybody and their uncle have a sub-woofer, having your turntable on a sound absorbing/dense mass mat is essential.

    • @emilyinhifi
      @emilyinhifi 6 месяцев назад

      Yes a power conditioner is another great component to use! Thanks for all of this helpful knowledge!

    I don't understand the analog vs digital sound difference. If you can hear a profound difference in warmth and smoothness. 😅 Then you probably do something wrong. 😢 So outdated debate in my opinion.
