Portrayal of Women Characters in Scorsese Films
Made this for my senior film project for my Scorsese class! Thought I'd share.
I am aware I accidentally pronounce Scorsese incorrectly a few times... apologies Mr. Martin, it was finals week and I was tired.

in this episode of Unhinged Karaoke, I sing this incredible song which doesn't get enough credit because not only is Joni a lyrical genius but this song is actually REALLY challenging to sing and it's a great vocal exercise and you wouldn't really think about it until you try to sing it to. so you should try to sing it too

Interesting take & I appreciate the research & time you put into this video, however, nothing you said about Naomi characterizes her as an enneagram 8. Those are all enneagram 3 sp/sx motivations. Also, agreed with the other commenter on "not sure what the through line is" - you conclude with "All the females play off of the male character" but that's generally a given in a good film, that characters of all genders will play off one another to support each other's arcs & stories. Was the point that the characters don't have their own arcs & only support the male's arc? If so, I don't feel that was really definitively shown. Still, it was an interesting survey of some of Scorsese's women, but not really complete, and the organization of the data could have been a bit better. I look forward to seeing how your content continues to develop over time, however, as this is an interesting topic & this video had a lot of potential; just wish you'd expanded a bit more and provided more evidence for what you were saying with examples from the film.

Thank you! This video holds my analysis and takeaways of some of Scorsese's films, not all. And to respond to your question, no, my point wasn't that I believed the female characters did not have their own arc. My 'point' of this video was to compare and contrast some Scorsese female character types and their personalities. However, I did offer my own suggestion that the women in his earlier films fit within certain stereotypes of his. Is Naomi not is self-confident, strong and assertive? My classmates understood my enneagram comments were for laughs, as the enneagram, while fun, is comparative to astrology. The enneagram is pseudoscience, interpretive and lacks any real validity. This was an old video of mine from school with time constrictions, or else I too would have loved to cover more characters and add more examples, Owlpotheosis.

Good video, but I don't think there's going to be a clear through line to be found here that is applicable to Scorsese movies generally, especially since he hasn't been the primary screenwriter on any of his movies since probably Mean Streets in 1973. Even on films where he's a credited co-writer, they're almost always adaptations of a book, and the few movies that aren't are usually screenplays that were floating around Hollywood before Scorsese got his hands on them. I'm sure, especially with a director so known for improvising and encouraging/permitting improvisation among actor, my framing is downplaying his hand in what winds up on screen, but I do think it means you usually wind up with characters that are a mix of input from different people. Sometimes the characterization winds up a bit trope-y or cliche (Scorsese movies aren't free of sin on those counts, but you can usually trust he'll do at least a little something to elevate it above general Hollywood fare), and typically even the great female characters wind up feeling like a bit of an afterthought relative to the dudes, but taken as a whole I don't think they wind up falling into a particular Scorsese-specific categorization. The video mentions some clear comparisons between the female leads in Goodfellas, Wolf of Wall Street, and Raging Bull, but they usually manage to feel distinct from one another and also feel like they're real people outside of the role they are playing for the protagonist and the story. Even if they're playing second fiddle.

That said, if you wanted to dive deeper into the topic of women in Scorsese movies, a few that stand out to me as particularly worth a look: Cate Blanchett and Kate Beckinsale in The Aviator, Sharon Stone in Casino, Sandra Bernhard in King of Comedy, and Vera Farmiga in The Departed. Despite Lily Gladstone spending most of Flower Moon sick and enfeebled, she still manages to feel like the lynchpin of that movie.

Special shoutout to Hellcat Maggie in Gangs of New York, the babysitter who won't fly without her lucky hat in Goodfellas, and Catherine Scorsese in all of them.

@@chrisadraheim Thanks for sharing! This video was in response to specific movies I had to analyze for my senior film class. Otherwise, I would have loved to discuss his other films! At the end of the day, I love that art is open to interpretation. Regarding your comment about there not being 'a clear line' through my video, I was analyzing different traits and tropes of his female characters and comparing them. My intent wasn't to generalize. Nor is it lost on me that Scorsese wasn’t the primary screenwriter for all his films, but as the director, he has the final say. Your feedback, however, is quite on-brand for a Scorsese fan! ◡̈
