I love it 💞
a winner
And Unbridled Songs 2 bar shoes definitely hindered him in the stretch.
I love Sunday Silence but he totally brushed/nudged Northern Wolf. It reminds me of the 2000 derby when Wheel away cut left hard at the top of the stretch to make room for Fusaichi Pegasus.
They rated Celtic swing higher. Blasphemy.
What an era of middle distance all time greats, Nijinsky , Mill Reef and the Brigadier only a year apart
Heard secretariat ran faster on turf...takes breathe away
Just a well bred monster if a horse! All class!
Nijinsky the all time greatest horse , Frankel wouldn't clean his shoes
Nijinsky was not only a brilliant racehorse but also brilliantly named. Sired by Northern Dancer and named after the famous ballet dancer, Vaslav Nijinsky, who said on his death bed that he would return one day as a racehorse.
With every passing year his legend grows. I'm 66 now and watched all his triple crown races when I was 16. Still get chills.
woow the picture quality is like an eye test from hell
Everlastng.
Too bad that there's not better quality footage available from this landmark race.
The best son to come out of Canadian champion stud Northern Dancer truly talented
Au coin du feu,,, Les Attendaient, SASSAFRAS, YVES SAINT MARTIN.
Best Race Hose Ever. If this doesn't cement that, I'm not sure what can. Big Red proved his dominance here. Who's better? Seriously.
Was only five in 1970 but I’ve heard and seen for myself just what a horse he was
So easy!❤
One of the greats. A sick horse in his last two runs. Sad.
Second place, Champagne Charlie, was a really fast horse. He gave Secretariat a pretty good run there in the stretch. This was early 1973. They’re both still babies figuring out how to fight.
Torsion is my fave. He would have won the race if he had been much faster and if he did not get tired out so fast. Torsion is the best ever!
I was looking at the other stats on this video and it said 985 people views but only 2 likes . How can anyone who watches and loves horse racing not show there appreciation for the person who made this video and give it a thumbs up which it deserves .
Nijinsky needs his own movie. I'd sure as hell watch it
I never get tired of watching the greatest horse ever watch his races . What a great magnificent horse and their will never be another in my lifetime .
Sure, this looks impressive at first-glance, but consider the circumstances: This was Secretariat's very first career turf race. His very FIRST! It was filled with great older horses who had won hundreds of other races. In fact, Tentam was the world record-holder for a mile-and-1/8, matching the same time that Secretariat ran the Belmont on dirt (still the all-time record). In short, Tentam was one of the best turf horses in history, and Secretariat beat him handily in his first ever race on turf. Secretariat was otherworldly.
It seems to me that Secretariat just teased the other horses - let them get just so close, and then "oh no you don't!" Indeed he was "other worldly". And on that note... I pray God has His majestic animals in Heaven. Could you imagine just one stroll on this magnificent horse?! I'd be honored.
Charlie made a nice move, until Ronnie went to the stick.
Actually I never saw Turcotte hit him. Looked like he just urged him with his hands when Charlie got close. I'm pretty sure Secretariat was never passed in a race once he got the lead.
@@1031E ruclips.net/video/sQs1dyZBtuk/видео.html
@@1031E I have never seen Sec get passed when in the lead either, but I have not seen all of his races. Pretty grainy stuff above, but go to the link provided and you can see Turcotte draw the stick much more clearly.
Most horses that break out that fast end up toast by about mid point in the race and lose badly. I wonder what point in the race the other jockey’s realized that Secretariat didn’t go out too fast, that he wasn’t going to break down and that they didn’t have a prayer of catching him.
Nijinsky Just Like Mr Orson Welles Narration ( GENIUS) As Was King 👑 Lester🎉
He seemed to almost toy with a great turf horse, Tentam. Such a great memory, of living during his racing days. Even seeing his final race, in person. Secretariat, simply the greatest, ever!
Great turf horse is an understatement. Tentam held the record for a mile-and-1/8 on turf. And this was Secretariat's first ever race on turf. Secretariat may be the most dominant "athlete" ever in any sport.
Agreed. Turcotte got him to the front and rode pace most of the back stretch and the final turn. Any time Tentam challenged him Trucotte had Secretariat up the pace and Tentam would fall back. Riding Secretariat was like driving a highly tuned sports car. He simply had an extra gear no other horse had when called upon.
Amazing winner top class horse
Looser
Nijinsky is the wonderful horse that got me completely hooked into flat racing
Me too. He was a truly great horse.
The second place horse couldn't stay with him at the end . Secretariat was pulling away from him .
There was many horses before Secretariat that were good but since him none can compare . Sure he lost a few races and still he must have had Pegasus in his blood line .
Great jockey never be another lester,!!
Really believe he was the best of all time . His record was marred by greed .
@Michael Moran Why do you think that?
@@nightowl7459 Nijinsky had won 9 top class races and Vincent o Brien told owner Charles Engelhard he thought he'd done his shift . But they ran him in the Ledger and then got him beat in the Arc . O'Brien wanted him retired saying he'd had a hard season and enough was enough but it's the owners who have the last say and off he went to get beat in the champion stakes. Greed or Stupidity I don't know .
@@michaelmoran9399 I particularly agree, but if it wasn't for Engelhard Nijinsky wouldn't have been a triple Crown winner, and he basically lost the Arc through a error, the Champion Stakes was obviously a race too many but they wanted him to leave on a winning note, but just like Baaeed this year, the Champion Stakes can come a little too late into the season.
@@nightowl7459 Don't forget the bout of ringworm he suffered mid season (post King George). For me it was THAT unfortunate illness that got him beat in the Arc. Had he won the Arc I'm convinced he wouldn't have run in the Champion and would've retired unbeaten. Nevertheless Nijinsky is still practically the best European horse I've ever seen
@@keithf_ I'm sure that ringworm hadn't helped, but he had the Arc in the bag before swerving and losing the lead close home, and I definitely believe that if he had won the Arc they would have called it a day with him, I certainly doubt we will see his likes again.
Big Red had an extra gear. I've been watching old film of his races on RUclips, and time and again it's the same thing: he shifts into it rounding the clubhouse turn or on the home stretch and wins going away.
It shows how good lester piggot was unbeatable on a Nijinsky
Another Northern Dancer progeny that became a great horse/sire
Sea Bird, Mill Reef, and Frankel were superior to Nijinsky.
Rest in peace, Lester Piggott, the greatest jockey of all time.
Great jockey but not a nice man
GOD BLESS LESTER, THANKS FOR ALL YOUR GREAT RACES, R I P 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Más aguado para narrar
I'll always love Secretariat like crazy, but greater still was Seattle Slew.
Right to challenge the cult of secretariat, but on what grounds slew? Needless to say you know who my favorite is
@@herecomesforego1787 Slew was the ONE AND ONLY horse to have won the TC with an undefeated record!
I don't know a dam thing about horses or horse racing but I believe Secratariat was a true world class athlete and I can't stop watching horse racing now.
Dr. Fager, the world record holder for a mile, also ran in this race in his 3 year old year. Secretariat beat his time by a full 2 seconds. Secretariat only ran 2 mile races in his career, this race and the Champagne as a 2 year old. If he had have raced as a 4 year old and ran a few mile races, he no doubt would still hold the world record for a mile.
The second-place horse at the Gotham Stakes race has some fight in itself it gave Secretariat a very good run
Amazed to read the immortal Secretariat is the only horse in history to win the Gotham and then win the Derby. Just another statistic from the greatest ever. It does make you think the winner of tomorrow’s race is likely a toss for the Derby.
I've seen Lester Piggott stating that Nijinsky's St Leger win was hard fought and he wasn't the same horse he'd ridden in the summer of 1970. Well ... looking at this closely, Piggott hardly had to ride at all. It seemed pretty effortless to me.
