How to buy used lenses – 13 tips
In this video I'll tell you how to safely buy used lenses - how to avoid common pitfalls and problems, how to recognize problems. I bring out 13 tips a buyer of used lenses should pay attention to. I'll list some common sense recommendations but also talk about other less known issues. For example I don't recommend buying lenses from professional photographers. I also invite you to think about whether or not you really need that new lens. I've followed these camera lens buying guidelines myself and so far I've been happy with the lenses I've acquired.

Three most essential filters in photography

    hi, i have plan to buy this lens to combine with xt30 to take pictures of moving cars and motorbikes. but I see you replied in another comment that this lens is not optimal for that because it is not bright enough for fast action. is there any suggestion of other lens that is better than this lens with similar price?

    • @tom_photo
      @tom_photo 14 часов назад

      Hi Toni! Thank you for asking! This lens has many positives, but it’s true that it’s not very fast (both in terms of capturing light and focusing). However, it will still work and isn’t a bad option to consider. Your best option would probably be the XF 50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR or even the XF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 R LM OIS WR. Unfortunately, these lenses are expensive. Some people also use the XF 56mm f/1.2 R WR for cars, but it has less reach than the other options and isn’t a zoom lens. If you’re photographing a fast-moving object in bright daylight and it’s not very far away, just about any X-mount lens can work. Best of luck to you!

    One question: after transferring pics from camera to iPad my pics have 2MPix size. And it doesn’t matter if I did them on FINE or NORMAL mode. What im doing wrong?

    • @tom_photo
      @tom_photo День назад

      Hi! Tanks for asking. I think this problem is related to the way the images are transferred, rather than a problem with your camera settings. If you're using the Fujifilm Camera Remote app to transfer photos, it may default to transferring 2MP (small JPEG) versions of your images instead of the full-resolution files. Change the setting from "2M" or "Compressed" to "Original" or "Full Size.". Consider using an SD card reader or adapter for your iPad. This will allow you to copy the images directly from the camera's memory card. Or alternatively, use Wi-Fi or cable. Let me know how it goes. Cheers!

      Hi! Than you for asking. The kit lens is nice and versatile and will work. However it's lacking bokeh and you don't have the option of using low F-stops. The camera auto adjusts for the DX lens. It works fine. i have the 50mm f1.8. the image quality is simply superb. It really is. Tack sharp as well. @2:53 : The polarity might well matter for modern cameras. The centre contact should be positive and the chassis (side) contact negative - that is the modern standard. However, most flash units from around 1980 will have this polarity, and ancient units that do not are likely to have high voltages and should not be used on a modern camera anyway.

    • @tom_photo

    @1:05 said _"Modern cameras can often but not always handle 250 volts"_ Are you kidding? The modern standard specifies under 24 volts, and former Olympus say 3-6 volts and Canon have recomended under 5 volts for some cameras. Most flash units made from around 1980 are under about 12 volts anyway for both technical and legal reasons. Not saying that some cameras can't take more, but I wouldn't try it.

    • @tom_photo
      @tom_photo 4 дня назад

      Hi! Thank you very much for your feedback. It’s true that many modern cameras can handle quite a bit of voltage. For example, my Fuji X-T30 is rated to handle up to 300 V. That said, I agree with you that it’s wise not to push the limits. There are also modern cameras out there that can only go to 6 -12 V (Canon EOS 10D, 20D, and Digital Rebel series; Nikon D40,50,60; Sony Alpha A100 and A200). Kind regards!

      Hi! Thank you very much for asking. First, you cannot go wrong with either camera because they are both wonderful. I really like the X-E2. I think it's a perfect camera for someone just starting their photography journey. The X-A5 will bring more functions but its image quality will not be higher and these additional functions are not too relevant. I personally like the X-E line of cameras a bit more than the X-A line. Additionally the X-E2 is a sweet spot among the X-E's. So, I recommend it with full confidence. What probably matters even more than the camera is the lens you are getting. Kind regards!

    I wish more people watch your videos and read your explanations before they start spreading the common misconception about DR400% setting combining multiple exposures into one RAW file... I understand they see the change in their RAW file, but it's simply because the RAW file was exposed at 2 stops less light with gain instructions to make it appear like correctly exposed - simply explaining why their highlight slider in Lightroom gives them more room to save highlights. But in fact they might've taken the photo just underexposed by 2 stops (btw I shoot most of my daylight digital pics underexposed by 2/3 - 1 stop since ever; exactly because of this... and I learned that at times when the dynamic range used to be very poor) and then increase gain (exposure) in post-process, and they'd get the more or less the same result with the same highlight "recovery". To me this seems clear as a day, and it is also in line with Fujifilm's own explanation, but clearly people without technical background would need to see some simple visual examples to believe it.

    • @tom_photo
      @tom_photo 6 дней назад

      Hi! Thank you for your feedback. The Fuji XC 15-45mm lens doesn’t display the exact focal length on the lens itself, but you can check it in two ways: On the Camera Screen, when you half-press the shutter button, your camera should show the focal length on the screen or viewfinder. In Playback Mode, after taking a photo, review it in playback mode. Since XC lenses don’t have an aperture ring, you can control the aperture through the camera’s command dial in Aperture Priority or Manual Mode. Best of luck to you!

    I own a D750, sort of upgraded D610. I like the smaller size of these fullframe camera's. They are very versatile, much more allround than the more pro-ish D800(E)/D810.

    The problem with the 27mm is that the construction makes it prone to breaking in the AF mechanism. I got the "turn camera off and on again" message too many times until the lens did not work anymore. Finally sold it for spare parts...

    If I used these lenses on a D3300 with an adapter (fujinon lens to nikon camera adapter) would I get similar results or do you think the different sensor would change the quality significantly? I guess the answer would be try it and see for yourself - the proof is in the pudding! Your comments, please!

      Hi! Thank you for this great question. Of course there is nothing like an experiment :). My guess is that they work quite well but not as well as with Fuji cameras. The camera manufacturers fine-tune their optics for their particular camera architectures. I've shown in my other video that Nikon lenses work with Fuji cameras but the result is visibly worse than what you'd get with Fuji cameras (ruclips.net/video/PSsyq8bYdio/видео.html). Kind regards!

      @@pakko7416 That is not possible the Fuji lenses are designed for mirrorless cameras. So they will not work on a DSLR as they have a mirror housing between the sensor and lensmount. So placing a Fuji lens on a DSLR will be too far from the sensor. Resulting in a sort of macro focus range. It will not be able to focus to infinity. Sorry for double posting this Tom but now Pakko will see my comment.

    Complete beginner here. How does this compare to a modern smartphone? And would it make a good first camera? Im drawn to fujifilm, i like this and the x-t20 but i have no real idea what im looking at. I will be using the camera for motorcycle trips and outdoor photography with some street photography rarely also

    • @tom_photo
      @tom_photo 15 дней назад

      Hi! Thank you for these excellent questions. The X10 has been one of my own favorite cameras for motorcycle trips :). I've also used it for street photography. What I like about it is its tiny size, excellent build quality and the leather case. Some smartphones are getting really good at photography but they cannot give you proper photography experience with control over shutter speed, aperture, focal length and many other parameters. You are also getting a proper lens, much better than any smartphone can have. The image quality of the X10 is not as good as the modern top cameras offer. This is primarily due to its small sensor. (It will beat the smart phones, though. ) However, with this this camera it doesn't matter as much as you'd think. Somehow it fits so well with the X10 package. The photos have such a nice and unique retro quality. I feel that the X10 is one of the best first cameras. You were also mentioning the X-T20 (ruclips.net/video/cdqteCyNwdc/видео.html) . This is a fantastic camera with a fantastic image quality, but nos as compact as the X10. You cannot go wrong with it. I hope it helped a bit. Kind regards!

    I have a case with mostly the same filters you mentioned. I have a variable ND filter, a circular polarizing filter and a few fixed ND filters. However, I don't use the UV protection filter, but I fit my lest with an ND4 filter. The reason for this is I want UV rays in my lens to fight off any potential mould or fungus! I also leave my lens in the sun on occasion for that purpose. Lastly, I have a nice big sealed pot with silica gel where I put my camera and lenses when I come home either from a humid place or when the temperature is low and condensation is likely.

    • @tom_photo
      @tom_photo 17 дней назад

      Hi! Thank you very much for your feedback. I think it's very smart the way you try to avoid fungus in the lens. Some photographers use expensive dry boxes but I've been reluctant to buy one. Kind regards!

    • @MyViewsOfTheWorld
      @MyViewsOfTheWorld 17 дней назад

      @tom_photo don't buy a dry box. They are great but too expensive. I bought 5kg of reusable silica gell and an air tight plastic container that actually locks. I use for a couple of weeks then pop the silica in the oven or microwave to dry out and use again. I stick the while camera in.

Why my camera say "flash is busy" ? is it because i constantly took pictures with flash continuously? after i took about 40 pictures with flash, my screen was stuck on flash is busy and i couldnt do a single thing

      Hi! Thank you for asking. This is a flash overheating problem. When flash is used a lot it can overheat and the the camera shuts it down for a while. When you let the flash cool down everything should come back to normal. Kind regards!
