A WEEK IN MY LIFE AS A PA STUDENT | Huge exam week, ALE, OSCE, Surgery practical, Study tips+more
Hi guys! Welcome to a week in my life as a PA student! This was filmed during the last week & a half of our 4th quarter of my didactic year. I have broken down my schedule *for this week specifically* below!
NOTE: I have shared some of my grades with you all to offer insight into my own PA school experience - please do not compare your own experience to mine. If you are not making grades such as this, please do not be hard on yourself. Remember, grades are NOT the most important part of being a PA student & future PA. Many factors contribute to being a great provider. Everyone’s situation / experience / program is different - my DMs & comment section are always open for any questions or ad...

Nice job, just a little advice... Your sutures are solid- but they're really tight- We dont need to anchor them down as tight as you would think. They can burst or rip skin.

Hey awesome video. This is my first time watching your channel. I have a question which South University campus do you attend. I am currently in my MPH program with South University and considering continuing with South in my PA Program. What is the program like, do you feel that you are being prepared adequately?
Hey where are you rings from?

Hey :) I’m hoping you can help me out here. I’m a senior in high school and looking into studying to become a PA I’m very confused on how many years exactly it will take such as how many college years will I have to do in order to become a PA thank you in advance 😊!
Hi! So I’m going to be applying to PA school next year, and I’d love to answer this question for you! You have to get a bachelors degree (4 years) in any degree that meets PA school prerequisites. This is usually going to be a bachelors in things like biology, chemistry, biochemistry, health science, microbiology, etc. You can also opt for something completely different (Spanish for example) and choose to take required science courses as electives. PA school is, on average, 2.5 years long. This means the entire education process will be around 6.5 years. Keep in mind that schools also require shadowing, direct patient care hours (paid/volunteer), and a standardized test (GRE, PACAT, or MCAT depending on the school). However you choose to do those three additional things, whether during undergraduate school or during a gap year, remember that, even though it won’t affect your education timeline, it could affect your overall timeline.
@@ew5601Hello! Thanks for your well thought out answer. So before applying to PA school, I heard that you have to complete a certain amount of hours working in a hospital. Is this true? I heard it from Med Insiders, “so you want to become a PA?” I may have misunderstood
@@suywetw6086 You’re welcome! So the experience doesn’t necessarily have to be in a hospital. It just needs to be considered “direct patient care experience,” and each program usually has a list of healthcare jobs that qualify for their PA program. The best thing to do would be to look at each school you’re applying to and pick a job that counts as direct patient care for all of them. Schools also usually have minimum hour requirements. The schools I’m applying to having a minimum requirement of 50-200 hours; however, some schools require a minimum of 500. To be a competitive applicant regardless of requirements, 1,500-3,000 hours of direct patient care experience is best.
@@ew5601 Thanks again for your response! The school I am interested in requires 500 hours as you predicted. They’ve also listed the kind of jobs that would be considered direct patient care. I am just wondering, so when I’m doing my bachelors, I have to get a job and start getting my hours? Do I apply my resumes and stuff for these jobs? Or do the programs themselves provide these jobs? I’m really confused about how I can reach out to places and ask to get a job or volunteer there.
@@suywetw6086 You’re welcome! So you can choose to get those hours while you’re in school for your bachelors, or you can take a gap year after getting your bachelors and work during that time. Which one you do will just depend on how much of a hurry you’re in to start school. Even if you decide to work during a gap year, I’d recommend getting enough hours to apply to schools right after graduating. Most people get into PA school on their second try and not their first, so that’s why. If you have to apply a second year, it wouldn’t put you behind because you’ll have already planned on the gap year. If you don’t have to apply a second year, you’ve gotten in early! 😃 Applying to these jobs will be the same as applying to any other job. You’ll have to search around the internet or in person for the jobs you want. You’ll send in an application, a resume, go through an interview if they contact you, etc. Healthcare jobs also usually require a TB skin test, up-to-date vaccination records, etc. as part of the hiring process. Regarding volunteering, I’d recommend doing volunteer work that does not pertain to healthcare. The direct patient care hours show the programs that you’re dedicated to healthcare; however, they want to know that you care about your community, too. I’d say look up some places in your area (animal shelters, churches, local zoo, etc.) and ask how the volunteering process works. You can usually find volunteer-related information on each organizations websites, too. Be mindful of shadowing hours because schools require those, too. With this, you’ll have to find a PA, get their contact info, and ask them if you can shadow them. Also, the more interested you are in their speciality, the better! Not only will you be learning about the PA job, but you can learn about it for the specialty you like. I think the majority of PAs will allow you to shadow them, but the hardest part is finding one. I’ve found that personal connections are best. Post on social media, ask friends, ask family members, etc. if they know any PAs. I’d say find a good 4-5 schools to apply to. You might end up getting into a school or being interested in a school you hadn’t considered going to. (This happened with my friend who’s going to med school, and it happened to me, too, with PA programs. 😂) Let me know if you have any more questions! 😊
Oh!! I’m also curious, I would love a comfy shoe collection video/short, I’ve been trying to find the comfiest tennis shoes to wear with scrubs and am curious what shoes you think are the best for being on your feet most of the day
Just found your channel and LOVE IT!! I’m doing a PA school interview this week & am always inspired to watch current PA students work hard while maintaining the other areas of their life that they love🥹 thanks for the inspiration!!
