That's basically what I do on guitar, just skipping around through the harmonized major scale as the foundation I'm thinking in.
Same! I've applied this concept when I'm practicing guitar and bass (arpeggios off scale tones) and it really helps get familiar with where the "right" notes are 🙂
@@jackofallstaves I learned it when I realized Hendrix's Little Wing is just him improvising on the chords in a walk around the harmonized major G scale with a flat 7.
@@Gnaritas42 Great connection! 🙂
@@jackofallstaves so my current thinking is that the major scale harmonized is like a hopscotch game, and playing music is like skipping around playing hopscotch. It’s musical when you skip in a good rhythm.
@@Gnaritas42 Cool analogy! I think a harmonized scale is a great way to learn all the chords in a key, but you're right that "hopping around" is where the real magic happens. It's amazing how many sounds and feelings can be created just by mixing the same chords in different orders and different timings!

This is a really good video honestly, i appreciate it, i really like having long nails but im more of a fan of the softer sounds on the bass, so they will have to get cut, thanks for the video showing the differences it can make
Yeah, it's amazing how much of a difference it can make. At one point, I had a weekly bass gig and I ended up adding a nail clipper to my keychain in case I forgot to clip beforehand. Definitely ended up with some scratchy sounds at a few of those... 😅
The way you shape your nails matter, the reason you’re getting that scratchy sound is because your nails are getting caught on the strings.
Yup. In my case, nearly any extra length makes it harder to play the way I want. I'm all for people doing what they want with their nails, but it's important to be aware of how it can impact things. Pros and cons...
Ska is the way though
Definitely! I cut my teeth as a bassist in a ska band :-)
😮🎉
Thanks for the comment! Any music questions I can help with?
😮😮😊
Thanks for the emojis 🙂 Anything specific from the video that you liked?
Yo sir whay bass is that ?? Looks sick
My pick's hitting sound on string is Louder than its chord sound! Is there any pick which doesn't make that hitting noice
What kind of picks are you using? Usually thicker picks will make a louder string sound when strumming, so it may be worth trying some thinner varieties. The picks I use in the video are Dunlop Tortex Standard Guitar Picks .60 mm. They've been my go-to for years. You can check them out here: guitar-center.pxf.io/0JbaoN
Exactly what I needed to know!
Glad to hear! 🙂 Any other music questions I can help with?
I play bass and classical guitar and i would love to grow my nails out for classical but then i cant play bass anymore
The struggle is real! Always with the pros and cons...
i have very long finger nail beds, so even if i file my nails down all the way (without injuring the nail) i still get the double pluck on bass. what can I do?
Good question. Are you approaching the stings totally perpendicular or at a slight angle? I've developed an angled approach over time that seems to help.
Thanks sir
Glad this helped!
Thanks for the video. Great tips. @11:09 One suggestion is to get a short scale bass. Also, I found that how the bass is positioned helps with the "little finger stretch". Having said that, even having a short scale and positioning better, I still struggle with the stretch!
You're welcome! Glad you liked it. Yes, a short scale bass is one option. I don't have as much experience with that personally, though. Thanks for mentioning it! The "three finger only" for the low register is actually an adaptation of the technique used on an upright bass. THAT instrument is nearly impossible to play with four fingers in the low register, so I was taught to use fingers 1, 2, and 4. It helps keep the hand more relaxed on the electric bass too, especially when starting out. And yes, bass placement can also have a huge impact. If it's placed too low, it's much more difficult to stretch the fingers to reach all the frets. I always have to tell students not to loosen their straps too much even though a lot of the "cool" rockstars play that way :-) What other topics about bass or music would you be interested in seeing a video about?
Man that work ty
Glad you liked the video! I hope it helps you get started on bass well :-) What other topics about bass (or music in general) would you be interested in seeing?
Thank you so much
No problem! Glad you found it helpful 🙂 Do you have any other questions about music?
Very good for right handers. Sucks for left handers. If you will refrain from introducing the comment “ the opposite if you are left handed” the cohesiveness of the lesson would not be interrupted. I was doing fine until you announced that then I had to reorganize my brain input and I never did get back in the groove with you. It is either a right handed lesson or a left handed lesson not a both handed lesson. Make up your mind and stick with that only. Watch RUclips and you will see no real left handed instructors all of a sudden feel the need to include right handers.
Thanks for your feedback, Barry. Sorry that my comment made it more difficult for you to track with my lesson. Would a comment at the outset like, "I'll be teaching from the right-handed perspective" or something like that work better than saying "opposite"? I like to be clear when teaching to such a broad audience on RUclips, but don't want to unintentionally make things harder for people if there's a better way to present things.
@@jackofallstaves for what it's worth, I literally started playing bass today. I'm left handed, and I had zero issues with following you. I find it hard to believe the way you phrased your words would actually throw someone off. Or maybe I'm just used to adapting to a right handed world. Regardless, good video.
Thanks for your thoughts @GasStationSushiSkatesat48! I appreciate your take on the issue, and that you enjoyed the video :-) And congratulations on getting started on bass! What made you decide to start? I hope you have a great time learning the instrument. Are there any specific topics you'd like to see a video about?
Very good tutorial. Aloha from Hawaii.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it 🙂 What sorts of topics would you be interested in seeing in future videos?
@@jackofallstaves like to see: How often should strings be changed on the bass guitar...Best way to learn scales.....Reason for making fret and fretless bass guitars, as I would think beginners would learn much faster with frets.....Also, seems more and more players of 5 and some 6 string bass guitars are being played like a regular guitar than the traditional 4 string bass.....Also, a tutorial on the types (wattage wise) of bass amplifiers suitable for beginning bass players. Would a regular guitar amp work as a bass amp, such as turning down the treble and turning up the bass knob on a regular guitar amp? Thanks!
@@emericklamontagne3652 Great suggestions! I'll keep these in mind when putting together future videos. Thanks for your input! 🙂
@@jackofallstaves Mahalo (thanks) Jack! Aloha!
we no that
Good for you, Gary! Unfortunately, not everyone on RUclips is as knowledgeable as you...
Good taste. Pumchy attack doesn’t fit as many genres as well a short fingernails do.
I agree. I like having a punchy attack if the song calls for it--like a lot of punk bass lines--but I'd rather just use a pick to turn it on and off. What are some of your favorite genres to play/listen to? Thanks for commenting! 🙂
@@jackofallstaves i love motown. Especially everything that James Jamerson worked on. Contemporary electric bass owes everything to Jamerson IMO. I listen to a lot of indie, punk, math rock, outlaw country, old school reggae, city pop, some metal. I used to hate how bass doesn’t have as many tonal options as guitar, but as I’ve gotten older, a good well rounded p-bass is about the only bass tone that isn’t annoyingly intrusive. Anything that strays from that distracts me from appreciating the entire arrangement. Am i weird?
James Jamerson is a legend! I grew up listening to Motown in the car with my mom and always loved it. I think his bass grooves were a big part of the reason I enjoyed the music so much, even though I didn't realize it until I was much older. And no, you're not weird (at least not for having a strong preference for bass tone!). Bass is a foundational instrument in music and its tone should reflect that function, which means a robust and well-rounded tone about 95% of the time. There are certainly times to tinker with different bass tones and effects, but they should be considered like icing on a cake that already has established substance and stability. Also, glad to meet another musician with eclectic taste! What artist(s) are you listening to a lot currently?
I like it!! Thank You Sir 👍👍
Glad you like it! 🙂 Any suggestions of what music topics you'd like to see me cover?
I much prefer a perpendicular angle to my index finger with the last joint of my index finger close to parallel with my thumb. I call it the Texas grip vs the weaker (what I call) California grip shown in this video.
I've seen folks use that grip as well. I don't like it as much personally, but I don't think it's a bad option. Ultimately it comes down to functionality and comfort, which is definitely a personal preference at the end of the day. Thanks for the comment!
@@jackofallstaves Thanks Jack! For me the functional aspect is I don't drop the pick as much 😅 and it's much easier to do pinch harmonics.
Not dropping the pick is definitely preferred, so I'm glad it's working out for you! 🙂
great vid concept!!
Thanks! Anything else music related you'd be interested to see?
Why not use a nylon string guitar?
That's also possible. I'm not personally as comfortable on nylon at this point and I find that steel strings give an overall preferred sound for most of what I typically play. Good question!
