It's not a situation that requires an apology. Oh, sure, it'd be courteous, but it was a mutual-fault scenario. Or perhaps a non-fault? Based on all the information the officer(s?) had, and from what all available sources tell me, the son had ALREADY entered a vehicle. Look, did they roll up on him leaning into a vehicle (that didn't belong to him but let's just ignore that (haha XD amirite)) where his "tells", self-soothing, whatever, weren't visible. All they get reports of is "suspicious guy apparently scoping out vehicles" from what I'd guess was an out-of-towner (rental car per reports) who didn't know about lil' Nick's condition - and why should he? It's not anyone's responsibility to get a thorough briefing on the eccentricities of all the neurodivergent people in-town so that they can just preemptively forgive illegal acts because "oh they just don't know any better". And the casualness with which she explains "Oh, he does that" when the cop explains that he was going through cars - I didn't know autism gave you a free pass to commit crime! It looks like officers too often get offended, angry, and immediately escalate to physical brutalily when someone doesn't comply with their orders. Perhaps they could calmly ask questions why he had entered that car, call social workers instead, or ask neighbors and family to identify the person and ask questions before causing injury. Not everyone is capable of understanding barking orders or comply with them because highly stressful situation could put them in disassociated state. Calm and patient approach is appropriate when a person doesn't pose immediate threat. Hands in pockets? Observe him closely. Don't beat him or pepper spray him. If you can't handle some ambiguity and noncompliance, find a different job.

Situations like this (the video says 6 years ago) went nationwide viral after the Karen Garner arrest and, a huge lawsuit. Police simply are untrained, and most of the time unaware/uncaring about the special circumstances they can walk into. A person with a cognitive or mental disorder may be acting strangely due to their illness, a lack of proper medications, or some such. And the police think they are 'high" and rough them up. Tase them or spray them. Or worse, shoot them 'in self defense.." I am disgusted that this continues to happen...
