Technically you can start from either as long as you do it consistently. It's probably easier though to start on the right and move left as it's the same direction you knit. Although if you knit the other direction the reverse is true. I would read it in the same direction you are knitting. I will try to do a video later if I can. Also if the chart has numbers on the bottom work to the higher number.
