Handmade Business Tips

Добавлен 11 сен 2014
I owned and ran a successful soap and skincare business for the last 10 years called Second Spring Naturals, which I sold in early 2024. I'm now back to give advice to new small handmade business owners and hopefully do some shop reviews for you here on the channel to keep my hands in the creative space (without all the work:).
Etsy Shop Review | Selling on Etsy Tips
Today we're doing an Etsy shop review of Dee Dee's shop BudsNSudsIdaho to offer some suggestions and get her some shop traffic so show her a little love on Etsy and go check out her soaps!

You just popped up on my page. Listening and watching I think although different and artistic a person wants a good soap comfy to hold which provides that little bit of luxury for one’s skin. I’d concentrate on your core soaps these are your sellers
Thank you very informative
Great tips thanks
🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽 Would you be willing to do mentorship . I would love to learn from you
I’m going to use square space for my website . Would you review that as well
Thank you I love this transparent video . I’m wanting to start making soap and possibly start a business . Thank you for the honesty . New subscriber ❤ I only have 11 subscribers so far so im trying to grow my Channel. Wishing you much success
I think novelty soaps are just that. Maybe you could get a return on them by putting together gift baskets to sell with them. I don't buy novelty soap because it's so pretty and I don't want to use it, but I would by a gift basket with novelty soap, bath bombs, loofah, body butter, etc. to give as a gift.

I was thinking of going with my own website on square space. It has lot of features and affordable for a new business in my opinion. Since technically you don’t own your store on Etsy. I know you can make good money but it’s very saturated what are your thoughts.
Love your honesty thank you. New subscriber
These are really unique products that I've never really seen or heard of before!!
Agreed! I think she can do some fun things with this.
Show Dee Dee some love over at Etsy! www.etsy.com/shop/BudsNSudsIdaho
Ahh, thank you so much!! I have had the exact same thoughts of everything you mentioned!! I just haven't completely leaned into that niche/target market. It's so nice to hear some affirmations!
It would be such a great way to test it out since you don't have a million listings in there. You could be the go-to shop for mamas!!
Would you like a shop review? I love doing these. It doesn't have to be soap! Any handmade business works for me. Such a fun way to give back.
I would love a shop review!
Yay! The first one! I love doing these. What is your Etsy shop link?
Thanks for the message on FB. All set and your review is up! ruclips.net/video/k0rl3bWxsfg/видео.html
Thanks for watching! Leave me questions or suggestions for the next video. Have an Etsy shop you want me to review? Link it in the comments.
Let me know here in the comments if you would like tips or advice on your Etsy or Shopify store -- or if you have other handmade biz questions . Be sure to link your shop IF you want me to do a video reviewing it and answering your questions/ offering advice. Otherwise, I will collect questions and create videos answering them -- but still link your shops!
Congratulations on your growth I wish you all life’s best ma’am
❤❤❤❤❤
Good luck and God bless you! Hugz, Tree
I get it. So much work
Best wishes
THank you.
😢 I loved watching you! You will be missed. Wishing you all the best!
Aww. Thank you. It's really hard to keep putting in the time after a while and when there isn't compensation. RUclips gave me credit for subscribers, but I never quite had enough views to get monetized. Something had to give. Thank you for the nice message.
I use a premix 50/lye 50 water any suggestions on how to plug that into the soap cal? I think i figured it out but just wondering if you have any suggestions? Say i wanted a 33 percent lye instead of 50? Im new to all of this made my 1st test bar the other night😊
You can click a button under the lye/water area at the top where it says 'lye water concentration' and put in 50% when the box pops up.
@@Handmadebusinesstips thank you 😊
Thank you for being transparent.
Of course! I'll be doing an update after the experimental launch on March 2nd with the results, what I did, etc.
How can i get this table
The stainless steel table? I ordered it on Amazon amzn.to/3T9hlbN
Hi!!! I'm the soap donut chick from fb! This is such a cute video, and technique! That red IS stunning!
Yay! Welcome!! I LOVE working with red. Nurture soap is definitely the place to go for colors. Thanks for watching🥰

Please ask questions if you have any or suggest new soap tutorial videos. It helps me know what to share as I move more into teaching in 2024.
So the trash bag doesn't heat up a melt during in the mold
Not at all. I got the idea from a large-scale soaper who uses them for all of her batches. It saves so much time.
Really nice! 😊❤
Thanks! 😊
This will be one of the soaps in the March 2nd release! Jump in the Facebook Group for details🧼
I still use your whipped soap that I won from a giveaway lol! I REALLY love your whipped soaps, it's one of the best ones I've used!!
So glad to hear that! Thank you!!
Love your honesty!❤
Always happy to be transparent 💞
Beautiful beautiful purple colouring you are using, what is the name of the micas? Unfortunate that the low flat camera angle meant we could see just the tops of your logs as you cut the bars and a lot of your wall. One tip also that comes to mind - if you hand stir your colour in first, before any stick blending, the batch will stay thinner for longer, and you have more stick blending time. That’s a thick trace you got there. But you look totally in control of it. I love your business advice, thank you. Subscribed…
Thanks, and much appreciated. The colors are a combo of purple vibrance and Berry Twist from Nurture.

I’ve been trying to source those mesh washcloths.

🙋♀️🙋♀️🙋♀️🙋♀️🙋♀️hope you are doing well 😊
I'm doing very well, thank you.🥰 Hope you are well, too!
I love packaging videos I would love to see you packing up some orders with your beautiful products
Well that's good because I am making a packaging video today and will include shipping one of my gift sets for an order that just came in. I'll post today or tomorrow!
Would love to hear more about the quarterly drops you're planning to do. I'm an SLP in the school setting, and I feel like the busiest times of the soap-business year is also the busiest time of the school year (from like October-February) lol!! I think that would be a good plan for me to follow...how are you planning to handle the final quarter? Will you have a summer/fall/Christmas release? Or just summer/fall?
You're right! I was in education for 21 years, so i get that. Since this is going to be an experiment, you can follow along with me, but I so appreciate that question about the final quarter because that was the one part that brought my plans to a screeching halt...LOL. My plan is to do March, June, early Sept and then a November HOLIDAY release just before Black Friday. Stay with me and let me know if you do it, too, and how it is going.
What shall we talk about next? Anyone up for a packaging video?
🙋♀️🙋♀️🙋♀️🙋♀️ 😊
Want to know more about any of these tips? Just ask and I can go into more detail.
The soap looks beautiful. With my excess goat milk, I've made milk powder. So it was interesting to see it added with the lye. I had no idea how to use mine.
Yep, mix it right in with the oils when they are hot. My soaps are amazingly creamy.
I make this soap .. after use its amazing❤ but I didn't get foam ...why?....how to increase foam please suggest us mam..
Unfortunately the market for small business soap/bath and body makers is very over saturated. Everybody and anybody that starts making soap thinks they can sell it. I feel there is no easy way to stand out as a soap maker. You are always trying to cater to the current trends. I have been making soaps and other stuff for over 10 years. I’ve always gotten great feedback on my products but I don’t sell a whole lot. Usually around holidays there is a spike in interest/purchases but otherwise it is sporadic. I’ve thought about just selling off all my supplies but I haven’t made that decision yet.
It's hard to come to that decision when you have invested 10 years. I get that! I just now got a wholesale order for a new store, but it could be a storm of new orders for wholesale or nothing. You can't predict. The one thing soapmakers can do is niche wayyyy down and sell things that are very specific for a group of people and only market to them. That's what I would have done differently. I may do a chatty video on that.
Do you have another video where you talk more about consignment. I'm interested in how that works. Belinda
I don't, but I can add it to my video list and do one. Stay tuned! Maybe I'll even interview one or two of my shop owners that I've been working with for YEARS.
Thanks for watching and I so appreciate these detailed comments. Keep the questions coming and I'll respond here or in upcoming videos.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge! I also had a drop off on my wholesale orders through faire. The last 2 years were great, but this year was just not nearly as profitable. Having a storefront, I feel my priority in 2024 is making sure my local customers are taken care of…just focusing on keeping my products in stock as much as possible. I also am doing consignment in a few local shops as well. That’s enough to keep me busy! I know you had a storefront at one point. A question i have is how did you manage your product line? I have a hard time being consistent cause i like trying new things but i also know many of my customers come back for the same product. How do you choose to bringing in new scents/products vs just restocking the regulars? I hope that makes sense!
Thanks for the detailed comment. I love your biz name, by the way. I think focusing on the storefront is a great idea and a smart one. The product line ----ugh. It's hard for creatives like us to stay with a consistent product line, isn't it? Here's what I did: I have a series of scents that make up my 'regular' creams, soaps, perfume oils, etc. THEN, I allow myself to try new things out every season. My consignment stores like this and my online customers like it as well. For the store, I had a 'line' of Bohemia products, which I named due to the Bohemia River and street where my shop was situated. I think if you design and print your own labels this is easier, but it takes a ton of planning when you have a designer and source labels/boxes in bulk like I do.
@@Handmadebusinesstips totally get it! It’s what I’ve been doing so far and because i make my own labels still it does make it easier to change things up seasonally! I just can’t stop my creative brain from wanting to make new things. Lol. Thanks for responding 💗
@@sweethopenaturals of course! Happy New Year!
I got a cricut for Christmas!! I’ve never used one…any fun ways to use it in Soapmaking and/or business? Have you ever talked about where you get your soap boxes and the process of doing that?
Hi! Congrats on the new gift! I got my Silhouette to cut names for gift box personalization, but I plan to use it to also cut stickers and labels. I need to get a better printer for that, however. That purchase was in the works for 2024 so we shall see! As far as my soap boxes, I have to have them sourced and then cut/ my design templates applied in bulk for them to be affordable. As much as I tried to have this done in the US, I had to go through a company via Alibaba to do it. I found one I trust and developed a relationship with them. So far it has worked, but during times like Covid the cost and shipping was too high to even purchase any for a year.
