One of the regular briefing videos we produced for Granada Technicians. This one was released in 1996 and covers the start of Channel 5 Television and Granada's involvement in retuning VHS modulators so as not to clash with the new TV channel.

Many from GTVR will remember Roy Ward who headed up Technical Training for many years. In this training video, which was produced in 1987 and has been recently discovered in my loft, he explains all about VHS Hi-Fi. Sad to say, Roy passed some years ago and I'm uploading this as a tribute to him.

Introduction to MERG C-Bus
Просмотров 3005 месяцев назад
C-bus is a digital control system which is able to control all electronics on a model railway using a single 4-wire data bus. Once installed, this system simplifies wiring and reduces the number of cables running around the layout yet gives outstanding flexibility of control. This video shows the basics of C-bus and shows how it operates on a layout. The team of developers at MERG are continuin...

Excellent !
As a new subscriber I just wanted to say how much I have enjoyed watching these uploads. I'm pleased to see you have Pretty Polly as one of your A3 types, I always smile when I see this name. An absolutely wonderful model railway.
Glad you mentioned the return crank setting at 8'00. Why can't they get it right? It's perverse
Sorry Tony but that chuff rate was way out, as it is with all of Hornby's decoders, sounded like it was running on one cylinder. Toss the Hornby decoder and fit a Zimo. Their 9F is a vastly improved model and when compared to a Silver Seal Ringfield tender drive its chalk and cheese.
Hi from Glasgow Scotland 🏴 Thanks for showing the Model of the U1 Sir on your Railway
Thanks for watching
It's a beautiful model, I have the Locomotion Models one. For me it's hard to pick the nicest as I also the Rails/Dapol SE&CR D class and that is one beauty of a model.
So glad that I found this channel. I could listen and watch Tony's artistry all day. An inspiration to all kit building modellers.
Thank god, someone took the time to re-upload this without the trains sounding like they're underwater, no thanks to Hornby
Wonderful!
Wow! You sir are masterful with this. I have used a lining pen but not like this and then to brush paint the curves just blew me away completely. A true master at work. Really great videos I'm enjoying watching them all.
Wow, this is really good stuff.
Couldn’t agree more with what Tony has said and great to get an insight into his brilliant modelling and extensive layout as well as those tips. It’s a fantastic retirement hobby too. So much to do and topics to master as the hobby continues to advance. That keeps the brain buzzing way too - which as so many researchers are saying these days helps keep dementia at bay! I hope Tony’s beaten his depression - I too used (getting back into) model railways to overcome the same. Hornby models in particular are often too light compared to their competition. I get a lot of pleasure adding lead weight to improve, fiddly work but very therapeutic, nothing like beating and shaping that lead! Also DCC chipping locos, adding cab / passenger lighting and firebox flicker effects too. All the best Stephen.
Most enjoyable well produced video. Always great to follow along. Thanks for sharing !
Well done Tony, you must be very happy with these new additions to your growing allocation
Fabulous looking and performing models. Theres nothing quite like an all metal model in my eyes. I for one would love to see the blurry A4 picture taken when you were 11 Tony. I was born 3 years before the end of steam. So missed out on getting my own steam era snaps. I work with Diesel Locomotives every day and they really don't do a lot for me.
Very nice, well done!
Gorgeous models. Tony inspired me to start my kit-building journey. I live in the US and kits are hard to come by, but I have one complete and a few being built under my belt. Wouldn't have done it without he or his knowledge and experience being so accessible.
As I am now a resident of East Anglia, these models are of great interest. But the price is a little steep. I'm hoping a few will fail to sell, which will oblige rhw retailers to offer a substantial discount, thus putting them within my price range, ad they are lovely locos.
"Outside is the East Coast Mainline, 12 inches to the foot". Priceless! The A2/2 isn't my favourite model, but the one in this video looks superb. I must acquire a Hornby B1 in the near future. A very enjoyable video.
Bonjour Chris, thanks for sharing this nice edited and very informative video! Tony Wright is restoring my faith in Heljan with this 'revised' locomotive. I might try one out ... with great reserve !
Excellent and much enjoyable video. Great to learn the history of these steam locomotives. Indeed, Hornby did a terrific job recreating the models in OO. Thanks for sharing !
I am unsure what surprises me more. The fact that Hornby have modelled this rather quirky and uncommon version of a B17. Or the fact that no B17 of any type was preserved. Thankyou for showing us these.
Great looking models running on a terrific layout. Very nicely narrated too, its always nice to learn the history of these locomotives.
Really enjoyed that, thank you
Little Bytham is a fantastic railway layout. I’ve got the video of Tony right building it and also his book on this layout love watching all his videos. Many thanks sharing it Colin.
Brilliant presentation, thankfully one which inspires. Nice to see a nitty gritty video giving hope to those who have two left hands!
Thanks
Thanks
Great video. Thanks.
Excellent work, as ever, by the inimitable Mr Wright. If Tony would post his dictionary of very, very, very bad langauge, I'd be very grateful as I encounter many situations (mostly of my own making) where such a thing would be invaluable.
Thanks for this review. I'm a bit of a novice, but i'm curious about the issue behind the lack of pulling power? Is it gearing or lack of weight? Having watched your review , my thoughts echo phil36310. They seem to have gone to obvious lengths with the detailing and finish of the model - and yet - snatched defeat from the jaws of victory with a couple of poor design choices.
A most appreciated very processionnal review. Indeed 3 too great shortcomings and the most unacceptable - to visible - is the loc to tender coupling. EU loc's have a simple short coupling system (ROCO) since the 70's and negotiate tight curves. Hornby, have a look at simple solutions and logic engineering ! It's rather bizarre to notice that Hornby makes great locomotives and also crappy designs in the same basket.... And the ongoing Quality Control problem with the 'made in china'. As a serious model railroader, reviews like this are a great help not to trow money away. Thank you ! This new version Black 5 is not on my wish list.
Lies and clearly don't want to support the hobby.
@@LNER985 90% of my loc roster is Hornby and very pleased with -- after addressing too many QC and other problems. That's the reality ! And clearly I'm not the only one expressing my experiences. Lies ?? wake up ! Not supporting the hobby ? what do you know ??
@@phil36310 Yet plenty of people have had issues with their Accurascale class 37s and Rapido UK GWR 15xx. Did that stop you buying models are them. Hornby new Black 5 is a good model and important over the previous version.
Thanks Tony !!! great review, pity about the lack pulling ability, six carriages is nowhere near enough, a bit of thought required there I think. Best regards.
The train in the station, under the roof, is amazingly realistic. Easily could be mistaken for the real thing with the superb weathering and trackwork.
Very enjoyable. Real trains running at scale speeds. You can't beat it.
Many years ago I used to trainspot from the 3 arch Bridge at Little Bytham which was quite a long bike ride for a day by the mainline. Although we couldn't see the numbers there was always excitement on seeing a train on the M&GNR going over the big steel bridge across the ECML. Every bit as good as an A4 on the mainline! Sadly we saw the destruction of the station, yet the slow lines continued to curve around the now non existent platforms. Last time I was on the bridge would be about 1964 February half term and by then little was left of the goods yard and many of the trains were diesel powered though some steam was still hanging on. At that time the M&GNR was closed and I think the steel girder bridge was gone too. Thanks for the memories of Bytham past. Very much appreciated were your lovely and very realistic models. I could almost be back there in the days of my youth!
Well done Chris very good explanation.
Thanks. I'm glad you like it. Chris
This is a wonderful video. Very professionally narrated and relaxsing to listen to. And the trains as always were superb and fascinating.
Thank you very much!
What an amazing insight into the running of one of my favourite model train layouts. Running through the timetable was fascinating. But I agree, sometimes its just nice to sit back with a cup of tea, relax and watch your favourite trains pass by. A small confession, if I may Tony? I drive 12 inch to the foot freight trains and I'm not a fan of shunting either. 😊
Glad you enjoyed it
Amazing train spotting and what a 'apotheose' !
👍
That is very impressive. Real steam and not oil vapour, does actually look very realistic. What a fabulous model. Im also looking forward to the 1 to 1 scale model running. It was very nice to see Peterborough North. Such an outstanding model railway.
Tony: very encouraging. Is the front of the boiler formed of pressed brass? Very intriguing, as my interest is building (mostly) diesel models in brass, or at least I try to. At least most steam has the advantage that the shapes are conic sections. Not so with diesels. "ONE thing for certain; no one who has tried to build the body of a production series Deltic is heard talking about tin boxes..' A.C.N Herd 'Scrachbuilding Diesels', Railway Modeller, April 1967. He working in metal, and James. F. Henderson in styrene, were leading lights. I wonder if they still survive? I never got to thank them for what the difference they helped make to me, and to others. A long story. And thanks to you Tony for promoting building.
With all the so 'up to date' micro detail ready to run models avaiable, I often wonder if there is stil a kit market out there ? I grew up with Kays and Wills Finecasts, though i couldnt build them myself, a friend of mine did a roaring trade among his mates in the early 70s.
A magnificent replica. Truly impressive modelling skill.
Excellent thank you Have one of these sets somewhere at least 1 infact❤❤❤❤❤
I always start with the smokebox radius first and work backwards from there.
Fantastic, continue to have fun and great ideas!
A great model Giles; be good to see what a bit more scenery and 'people' will do. A couple of suggestions: you lose voice sound somewhere about 2 minutes, and that rough track joint at about 3 minutes is a worry. Thanks for showing us some decent starts (and hopefully stops). That's a pretty swish double slip: scratchbuilt??? A serious layout to be taken seriously. Don't forget a couple of fire extinguishers dotted around, in easy to feel-access places. Good to see Tony's name again.
Well done guys, great collaboration
