Try moving in on your target when firing the BFG. When the BFG plasma ball hits something, it fires invisible tracers that have a very wide spread, emerging from the players origin. It's basically a giant plasma shotgun. The BFG ball itself only deals about 20% of the total possible damage. When you get into cover you basically waste the entire shot
