BMW R1250GS Final Drive (Drive Shaft Service)
I undertook this work back in the Spring of 2023. I have covered approximately 8, 000 miles since then and absolutely fine. The Video is about my discovery of a seized drive shaft spline with the Final Drive Assembly. What I did to provide a solution, service and re-commission. I have tried to provide as much information as possible. There might be some omissions and inaccuracies.

It is managed by Historic England for the state, but can be viewed whilst walking along the river Wey between Pyrford and Ripley. This medieval priory has had many different names. Hello CLLUK, I'm searching for clarification on aligning the reluctor to the sensor. Is it just aligned to the center of the end of the sensor? I can't see a corresponding alignment mark on the sensor. 2023 R1250RT. Derrick

    • @CLLUK
      @CLLUK 11 дней назад

      @derrickross2324 Hi Derrick, The reluctor has a reference mark which is aligned as accurately ( visually ) as possible to the centre of the fixed sensor. I've never heard or seen evidence of any specialist tool for this so alignment as far as I know is best engineering judgement visually. We are talking degrees and not arc degrees with reference to the reluctor or miilimetres with reference to the diameter of the sensor projected circular face. The sensor face doesn't have a reference mark that I know of. Hope all this helps.

    STARTING PROBLEM - SOLVED I own a 2019 R1250 GS Adventure which I bought new and I live in Victoria, Australia. I will keep this as short as possible and try and avoid going into any details that readers and fellow owners already know. I have experienced all the starting problems that have been documented by riders around the world for four years. The sudden and unexplained no-start events, the myriad of TFT screen fault messages etc. I do not know if this problem applies to every MY but it certainly applies to MY19, MY20 and MY21 as I have read user complaints online. I have used a total of four AGM batteries in four years, Exide (which caused problems in the first 3 weeks of bike delivery), Deka, Yuasa and SSB, all have been either 200 CCA or 240 CCA batteries. Batteries have always been fully charged and able to pass a load test when the bike failed to start and have been connected to an appropriate charger when the bike has not been in use. So battery problems are not confined to a specific batch of Exide batteries that were factory fitted by BMW when the bike was new. My son has an R1200 GS Adventure, he has used the same AGM batteries, and he has had zero starting problems over the four years that I have owned my bike. Regardless of the healthy status of all four AGM batteries the starting problems have always suggested that a battery power problem existed. Any mature vehicle system does not require changes to valve clearances, or require pushing whilst in gear, or any other unusual or creative change to get the vehicle to start. Does anyone have to do that with their car? Standard comments from BMW dealers have included ‘cannot replicate the fault’ and ‘they all do that’ along with others. Is BMW Motorrad really happy with that state of affairs? It has appeared so. I purchased a GOOLOO GP2000 lithium jump starter, it is small, light, and quick and easy to use. I carry it in my top box and it started the bike every time I needed it to. The bike started instantly and essentially proves that the complete starting circuit is serviceable provided that sufficient cranking power is available. BMW obviously made significant changes (mechanical & electrical) from the R1200 GS Adventure to the R1250 GS Adventure. When making those configuration changes did they carry out a detailed Power Management study under all user operating conditions, in all environments that users operate these bikes in, and over a reasonable period of time to ensure that the starting circuit for instance, from the battery right through to the starter motor and everything in-between, were compatible and actually worked? Only BMW know the answer to that question. I used the GOOLOO GP2000 for many months on many occasions to prove to myself that the starting circuit is serviceable enough to be operated as designed, and as delivered on the bike when it was new. Once I was convinced that the problem was the power source then I researched a safe and more capable alternative. You can research the various chemistries of Lithium batteries yourselves if you wish, I selected Lithium (Li) Iron (Fe) Phosphate (PO4) which is LiFePO4, it’s the safest battery chemistry and fit for purpose. I purchased a SSB Powersport Lithium Ultralite, LiFePO4, LFP14H-BS, 150mm X 87mm x 93mm. The battery came complete with screw on plastic spacers to raise the battery height to suit the motorcycle battery compartment. The bike now enthusiastically starts first time every time, under all conditions and as it should have done when I purchased it in the first place. I finally have the bike that I thought I purchased four years ago. Ignition has improved and all lights and displays have improved. If this problem went away at some production point then what was changed during production and why don’t all users know about it? Prior to starting the bike the ‘My Vehicle’ screen on the TFT display always shows a battery voltage approaching, or at, 13 volts I have an Ozcharge OC-PRO80L 12 volt 480ma LiFePO4 battery charger which I have not used again since I charged the battery when it was new straight out of the box. As soon as the charger tells you that the battery is fully charged then disconnect the charger. I have a charging pigtail lead fitted to the bike and I check the battery voltage with a meter via this lead before using the bike. The battery voltage is now always between 13.27 volts and 13.30 volts. The most the voltage ever drops in a week or more is 0.01 volts (1/100th of a volt) which is probably due to the bike internal clock and maybe a standby function of the keyless start module. The bike charging system is capable of keeping the battery charged and I will only use the battery charger/maintainer if the battery voltage ever drops below 13 volts which it hasn’t done and so far doesn’t look like it will. You do NOT, and SHOULD NOT, keep the appropriate battery charger/maintainer connected to your bike when the bike is not in use. Do I leave the GOOLOO GP2000 at home? No I don’t as I may meet a fellow R1250 GSA rider one day who is stuck at the side of the road/trail or next to a fuel pump in a service station because his bike will not start.

    Hi there, Why do you use a special cam tensioner, is the one from the bike not sufficient to do the procedure ? What is the main difference ?

    • @CLLUK
      @CLLUK 4 месяца назад

      Hi, As I understand. The tension exerted by the BMW Chain Tensioner is set to represent the tension the the 'Running Cam Chain Tensioner' exerts at a defined engine speed under nominal conditions. I too had this question. I even thought about finding/using a mechanical tensioner (no spring) use to push the Cam Chain up. But we don't know the required force or Nm to use. There is a danger of course of tightening too much and braking/dropping the chain within the engine.

I don't entirely understand the purpose of this tool "Cam Alignment Jig" - is it used to set the cams before checking valve clearances, or is it for setting during basket assembly? Or other purpose? Thanks in advance for clarifying.

    • @CLLUK
      @CLLUK 6 месяцев назад

      Thanks. The purpose of the Jig as I understand it is to lock the inlet and exhaust cams in their correct position at TDC whilst tightening up the end bolts to their correct torque. You raised a good point. I think it makes sense to do the cam alignment (that's if it need doing) prior to doing the valve checks/adjustment.

      Hi, yes, I think you're absolutely right. I was really sure that the Auto Decompression Mechanism was defective on the LHS. Now, after comparing in more detail with the RHS and others I don't think it is. I still need to complete a few further checks. What I see, though, is that the cam alignment looks out. So I shall be very soon carrying out a Cam Alignment. I've got the specialist tools for this apart from the "Cam Chain Alignment Tool" which after days of searching seems impossible to obtain. ( I did find a German retailer and ordered it, but the next day they informed me it was discontinued and refunded me :( But, good news is that I will hopefully have one on loan soon from the BMW Motor Club UK ( Southern Section ) So I will then do the Cam Alignment and put everything back together again and fingers crossed, test and ride. So, regardless what happens, I will upload a video on this bmw auto decompressor as it's different from what I am used to on other non bmw bikes. The 2nd video will be on the CAM Alignment procedure. I'm just hoping after all this, it resolved this starting issue. If it does, then it will be two things I've done. (1) Adjust valve clearances. (2) Adjust Cam Alignment. If it doesn't, then back to the drawing board.

  • @MrCruiser666

    Great instructions for the clearance check, thank You! But the adjustment needed : 1: Timing Chain Tensioner Assembly - BMW part # 83300444292; (tension for chain like in working mode) 2: Cam Alignment Jig - BMW part # 83302467268 (OK, you marked the gears, but the shaft alignment is also adjustable - right side 65 Nm ) I wonder how can you fix the decompressor! btw. I have the same starting issues. 2021-1250GS 27000km for a few months My bike has warranty, but I read everywhere dealers can't solve this problem.

    • @CLLUK
      @CLLUK 7 месяцев назад

      Thanks. Waiting for the replacement cam shaft and specialist tools. Will need to redo valve clearances checks of course and also cam alignment. • @CLLUK
      @CLLUK 7 месяцев назад

      Forgot to mention. The auto decompressor is integral to the exhaust cam shaft :( It comes as one part ( auto decompressor and cam shaft.) Minus the Gear Wheel and reluctor which I have to remove from the defective cam shaft and fit onto the new one. Yes, you're spot on 65Nm for the 16mm hex bots at the end and 8Nm for the Reluctor ( That's what BMW call it - the plastic composition component at the end and is part of the positional feedback system to the ECU. )

    Update: 24/01/2024. Since resetting the Exhaust Valves, the starting is still not completely normal. Sometimes it starts okay, sometimes not. So, I decided to open up again and look at the Auto Decompressions Mechanisms which are positioned next to the Exhaust Valve (Front) on both cylinders. (I should of done this the first time!) The Auto Decompression Mechanism only operates on the Front Exhaust Valve. Comparing both sides, it was clear that the RHS was OK and the LHS defective. This just flops around and doesn't return to the 'Start' position (ie, with the rounded profile protruding slightly above the cam lobe surface. So, this is indeed Good News and makes sense why sometimes starting is OK and others not so. I now need to look into a change out. I will upload a video on what I found later today or tomorrow.

Of the 8 clearances ( inlets and outlets ) I seem to remember only around half were slightly out of spec range. Just a footnote to this, my XJR started rattling as in the video, I got a can of Wynns, got the bike out, fired it up to warm the oil, no rattle!, so whatever was causing the lifter to stick cleared itself, therefore it may be worth waiting a couple of rides before using the Wynns, I’ve been on a couple of rides since and the rattle hasn’t returned 👍

      Okay, I didn't know they came without ABS. I've thought so many times of trying to find another one. Should of listened to all those people telling me not to sell it. Hope you find what you're looking for.

      Hi, Wynn's Hydraulic Valve Lifter Treatment. It's a small CAN, just did a search on EBay and it's £10.

    Why didn’t piston make contact with the valve if valve was held open and you moved crankshaft afterwards?

      Thanks Mark. It's really good to hear that these videos help people. Just clocked 24,000 now and still in same condition. Just discovered some split O rings on the chain so time for new one. ( 21k on the current chain )

      Good Luck. Always nice to know these videos help others. Thanks, I know, I spend too much time in cleaning sometimes. Verging on OCD.. 😊
