Two Brand New Lee Lines SP Daylight sets - April 2017
Просмотров 6747 лет назад
Lee Lines made standard gauge SP Daylight 4-8-4 engines in the late 1970's into the mid 1980's. Only 50 were made. The two sets in this video were built from parts left over from Lee Lines original production - in 2017 - 40 years later. Proudly built by Jim Waterman for a few lucky customers - there will only be 10 more engines. These are numbers 6 and 7..

    Hi Jim, the EF1 has a brush assembly/commutator failure in one of it's motors and can't run right now. I am in the process of narrowing down what the actual problem is. Otherwise she is doing fine and being well cared for. It's fun to see her in action.

    Other than at huge auditoriums, how do people run this "scale" at home?

    • @watermaj
      @watermaj 11 месяцев назад

      My home layout is a modest 8 by 16 feet, made up of 8 modules, 3 tracks, I have a bunch of tinplate scenic accessories scattered around it. Not huge, but with 87" curves on the outside, I can run large locos and pretty good size consists.

    This recorded fairly well - I was at the show and the live sound I heard was "off" - there's something funny with the room at Pino's - but the overall sound and especially James's vocal come across well here.

    My all time favorite gauge...I call them cartoon trains, especially the prewar and 40's...I like my track clean but all of my standard gauge stuff is old and sweaty.....mechanically excellent but used and loved...I'm 73 years old and the first set that was given to me Christmas of 1955 I still own to this day ....

    That GG1 looks like a John Daniels Line production from the late 1970's. Hard to tell since it goes by so fast and the lighting is a bit dark. The GG1 we had did not run well as it had rubber band belts so you can imagine how poorly they pulled. The coaches were heavy too, made of the same material as the locomotive, heavy plastic.

    • @watermaj
      @watermaj 2 года назад

      Thanks for the comment. A couple of us have Daniels GG1,s. This one has a cast aluminum shell, more closely resembles the Lionel GG1 in O, and uses 2 widened Lionel F3 drives.

    Thanks for posting and I assume video recording as well. As a teen in the late 70's and 80's I learned about the standard gauge more directly but it was old and tin plate type things. Seeing this I see an opportunity for big train runners and more modern collectors to have other then tin plate. Also the hobby consist of tin plate that can be just highly polished or old and chipped to modern and in some way kind of kooky. The Union Pacific BigBoy looks good until you see it make the turns. The GG-1's look nice but the end wheel sets look wrong. The addition of electronic sounds and smoke is a nice feature to and some years back thought of a wrong thing to do in tin plate trains...

    • @watermaj
      @watermaj 2 года назад

      Thanks for the post. I actually build both of those locos, and because standard gauge is in the 'toy train' world, I try to keep realism and tinplate factors in balance. The Challenger was designed by John Harmon in the late 1970's and had to run on 42" diameter curves, on this layout it is only 87" diameter, very tight for so long of a loco, so those compromises have to be made. Tinplate flanges are much bigger than scale as well, if they are scale, the trains don't stay on the rounded rails, so we do what we can, but mostly it's about having fun
