Used to take the bus to Sheffield from the bus station, over the Peak District moors, and down through Buxton.
Longton, made by the potbanks, died when the potbanks closed. Lovely old town in the sixties,as was Newcastle, Hanky seemed bustling as a kid with the new Lewis's store, all these glory days a memory now.
In the 50 years I've been alive Longton has always been a dive.
When I was brought to live in the Potteries as a seven year old seventy years ago in 1954, Longton was a thriving town in which you could buy anything. On a Saturday, the pavements were so full of people that you had to walk in the road to step around them. It even had four well patronised cinemas, the ABC Empire; the Alexandra; the Focus and the Royal. Looking at the place as it is now on this video shows just how long ago 1954 now is. It was a different world back then.
Queens/Longton Park is the best part of Longton in my opinion. Such a lovely park :)
Thanks for the video👍
Great show Allan, what does Etruria look like nowadays? be well and thank you:)
I trained as a glider pilot at nearby Meir Aerodrome. Flew there from 1967 to 1971. Still flying in 2023 . Also remember the Gladstone Pottety Museum. Dr Celloria of nearby Keele University was one of the founders. Knew him well. I live in Essex now. So sad to see the decline of Stoke-on-Trent .
When I dug out my granddad's pond for him about 30 years ago there was a huge chunk of runway still buried in the garden I had to smash through.
Thank you. Dimensions would be appreciated. Will this antenna work for 144 to 148 MHz in the US?
Can't hear want you saying
Have you got the dimensions. Thanks
Some nice finds there, Allan :) I lived in Longton for quite a few years through the 80's and 90's, moved out to Stone for a bit and then back to Weston Coyney in the 2000's, so this area is well known to me. The wreck it has become in just the past few years is quite the shock I have to say.
Your garden looks quite cozy :)
Thanks for the history of the area! Hope to see it sometime!
Great work! Smashing video. I can't believe the bumbling idiot council nearly got to demolish the town hall in longton!
great video mate brought up in longton but not lived in the potteries for 20 years lovely memories thanks for this it made me smile
Used to love going to Longton and if the bus drove through the station I thought that was so cool at the time as a kid. Loved the Woolworths pick n mix too. Later I used to drink there in the Robin Hood. What a state the town is now 😢.
Longton, best town in SOT now !,,, Started my career off in Longton @John English , Gill Maiden , the most influential lady in the trade I've had the pleasure to be trained by and worked alongside ....
Wowwww. This has taken me back to my childhood. I used to be put onto a bus in that old station at 12 yrs old, by my my mum, bound for my nans, up Ashwood......... I always say the same, look up. Im happy that i found this video. Ty.
That was interesting, thank you! I'm amazed at the amount of potbanks there were in Longton, I knew there were loads, but didn't fully realise just how many! My father in law, who was a builder, told me in the 1980's that in the 1920s, when they had the general strike, and people were low on everything, including coal, that they somehow managed to mine nevertheless, and took out layers of coal that are under Longton Town Hall. I can't see how they could've taken away all of it's foundations or it would have collapsed by now, but, they took out a load of coal from what he told me. Has anyone else ever heard this?
its a pole not a tower.
You could have used a little more audio . Couldn't hardly hear what you was saying. Very nice crank up mast setup just the same. 73 AE4OY William Peacock EM-81UF SOUTH EAST GEORGIA 😁
Speak up turn off music
I prefer the old buildings too.
My mum asked for the bridge to be painted by the council and they did as she asked. 😁🤗
Really great commentary and history. Thank you
Hi Allan I would like to build an antenna like yours. Can I have more details about it? I already have sent an email to you. Thanks in advance
Ha in the 'Focknrollers' film (here: ruclips.net/video/uP6KSwC7mCo/видео.html ) we made some years back we called it 'LA' (for the Longton Area) :) and of course some of the images in your LA movie here take me back a very long way because my father was originally a bus conductor and later ticket inspector... those bus station images are pearls ;-) Ha the 'FocknRollers movie' is a music related comedy rockumentary and if you never saw it Allan you will probably get the humour (English). I remember making the film at the time and watch for the outtakes at the end of the film... I can laugh just thinking about them. Regards... T
Is the bolt down the bottom where it Rise and fall just a bolt going through the pipe or is there a sleeve through it
Hi Allan, I hope you are enjoying your new Tele! Tony, awesome job on the Tele. I could tell by watching you play that she's dialed in and good to go! What's even more awesome is knowing that there are folks out there that are in my age group and still rockin'! Hmm, I'm over here on the left coast and I wonder how far I would have to drive to have a jam session with you guys? Much Love and Respect........................
Haha, you guys are in the UK. That's gonna be a long drive from California....lol
Thank you Alan. It's great seeing Longton like this, as being from t'other end I only ever drive through it. They call it progress BUT give me traditional/ classic everytime. Thanks again . Take care.
More or less across the road from the old court house is an alleyway, which leads to Sutherland Rd. The alley was commonly called cut-throat alley when I was a kid. According to common belief, this was because prisoners were brought through this alley from the Police station to the court house.
Nice memories...I always thought the church next to the bridge was called "St Johns" church"?
Very nice .Tthank you for your video
Fantastic Job, I'm looking at doing something similar when I get around to doing it, I've just put an EFHW up from UK Antennas not high and 3D printed some pulleys what poles are you using looks better than scaffolding poles not as heavy i have a Vertical Antenna but I taken it down due to the wind here so I've just put the EFHW up not very long but seems to work😉 Thanks Tom.
Great job simple and effective design; very well made.
Nicely done! All the best, de KI5HXM
Ha I didn't know this was on here :) so I posted a link from my website... I can't post published music on my channel so its fine here... and I trust the guitar is still going strong... it certainly played OK. Fire breathing monster!
Nice tilt over mast, But, by definition, it is not a tower.
It is not a tower.
Allan what is the impedance like, do you use a balun ?
looks great Allan, all the best!
OK NICE DE VU2TKC KOLKATA INDIA....
Отличный ролик! Высокая детализация процесса!
Gracias, ahora vendo antenas....
Get rid of those false gods, repent and turn to Jesus
Nice.. I don't understand how the earth works.. looks like there is an insulator between the mast and the contact on the square tubing.
hi well the earth is fed up into the square tube through a 1 inch hole cut into the base plate and the attached to the inside of the mast by means off the bolts that go through the top holding plate the earth cable is 30amp earth wire hope that is ok if not just email l am on QRZ g6tmo regards allan
Nice Build Allan from M7 HIJ STEPHEN WOLVERHAMPTON.
