Thumb sucking should be taken away immediately, replace with a pacifier if possible. My daughter is almost 30 and still sucks her thumb. We tried everything and none of it worked.

I was 5 or 6 before I ever saw a dentist, but I had healthy teeth. I never had a single cavity or dental problem my entire childhood. My grandma brushed my teeth starting at a year old. By two, I was brushing my teeth with regular toothpaste and gargling with original flavor Listerine(is it just me or was it 10x stronger back in the late 80s??) right after brushing. I didn't get a cavity till my 20s.
